Situation
The Client is global leading manufacturer of anti theft and electronic security products and services for retailers and commercial and industrial customers. In the retail sector, the client makes the tags attached to each article (e.g., clothing, CDs, videos) which have to be removed / desensitize at time of purchase. Within the industrial sector, the client manufactures video surveillance systems using high tech cameras feeding into computer systems. |

For over thirty years, the client had been benefiting from a steady and enviable growth. Once considered one of the fastest growing companies in the USA however, growth pains started accumulating, mostly in the areas of rising inventory, quality and production cost. Similarly, numerous acquisitions resulted in the proliferation of non-integrated information systems throughout the world.
While the client started focusing its attention on the redesign of its business processes to reach greater global efficiency, the CEO's top agenda became the implementation of a world-class information system to support his global vision:
"To Become The Electronic Security Company of the 21st Century" within two years, and by delivering Quality to its customers, its employees and its shareholders.
The client had been operating with multiple home grown systems, including order processing, shipping, invoicing. It also relied on a customize software package (AMAPS) to support the operations of all its major plants.
Key requirements for the new system included:
-
Off-the-shelf and stable Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software package - which would facilitate the flow and reporting of accurate information, globally
-
Embedded Best Business Practices - that allow the simplification and alignment of the company's business practices around the globe
-
No customization - to minimize the cost of implementation and maintenance

Solution
In order to address both its business and IT issues, the client called in Sogeti who conducted an Analysis and Design (A & D). The result was a comprehensive project design and benefits case aimed at transforming the company's operations, top to bottom.

As the European division had been separately rolling out the Baan software for a few months - and after due diligence of the software functional fit to the company's business requirements - Baan IVc was confirmed as the software of choice across the company.
The plan for the Baan implementation ran concurrent to the redesign of the company's business processes: |
- Phase 1 called for a pilot implementation of order processing and financial functions to support the company's International division.
- Phase 2 called for the rollout of these functions across other divisions, as well as the piloting of manufacturing functions.
- Phase 3 completed the rollout throughout the company, including financial functions.
|
| |
Sogeti proposed to use Baan's own Target implementation methodology as a framework, while meshing aspects of its own PERFORM methodologies. Dynamic enterprise models (DEM) were also used and re an integral part of the implementation. Models served as the basis for the simulation scenarios and were used to develop the standardized processes for each site. The models contained the detail process procedures, and served as the primary documentation source for the new system.
Early success came when phase 1 was completed in five months: Sogeti assisted the client in "going live" with the applications supporting the processing of international orders, from order taking through invoicing to collection. Keys to this success included:
|
| |
- Sustained executive ownership and demonstrated enthusiasm for the new system
- Business savvy and consulting skills of Sogeti's module experts:
A comprehensive communications approach, involving business users in the selection of the software, as well as their daily involvement in the prototyping of the new application
- Dedication of the client's own resources for knowledge transfer and long term sustainability: key users are trained on the job by Sogeti; technical MIS staff is formally trained in all aspects of the Baan application and technical requirements.
|
| |
Sogeti is continuing its role of assisting the client through the global rollout by providing Baan functional expertise (i.e., manufacturing, finance). |
